I agree with you that total outsourcing may not be the best thing, especially with products that have a rigid design, such as a plane, that has to met security standards. But the fact that you leave more liberty to people who are proefficient in a domain to design a piece for you has a lot of advantages. Computers are a good example where the production of individual part is split up between different companies for the best. If Apple was designing its own chips for the GPU and CPU the way they used to do it for the Apple I and Apple II, computers wouldn't be as powerful as they are today.

On the other hand, I have to admit that the Boeing example, right now, is not the best. They announced further delays recently. However I think that for electronics, objects such as computers or cell phones, or products that are not too complex, that can only lead to better results since the companies manufacturing the pieces have better knowledge of the pros and cons of a certain design.

I've read it while ago and I highly recommend it. Most of the content is highly informative and helps you understand the many advantages of collaboration at any scales.

The only part that I consider lacking is the "Global Plant Floor". Primarily because they are basically telling you to outsource all of your production line, which then leaves you little to almost no value-added to your product. Also, one of their main example, Boeing and the 787, has faced numerous delays because of their "let's let our contractors design the product" approach. An approach highly praised in the book for reducing the time-to-market of a product.

Still, Wikinomics is a mind-opening book and a great read on the subject.

How did you like it Renaud?
